Elling Church
Elling Church was built in the first half of the 1200th century and towers over a moraine hill close to Elling Å.The church is built of brick and thus belongs to the relatively small group of brick churches in Vendsyssel. It is whitewashed and has a red tiled roof.
The brick churches in Vendsyssel all have wall decorations in the form of pilasters and round arches.
The north side of the nave has a peculiar saw-toothed frieze instead of the usual round arches.
The church has been continuously added to and renovated, including the addition of a south chapel to the nave and a massive tower with the characteristic ridged gables. The church itself previously had a number of frescoes, but these have now disappeared or been whitewashed over.
Among the interesting furnishings is the Renaissance-style altarpiece with a canopy supported by two columns.
The altarpiece can be dated to 1635, but the painting in the altarpiece is from 1969 and was done by Oscar Nicolaisen. The previous altarpiece from around 1900 can now be seen on the north wall of the tower room.
The church ship is a model of the warship "Printz Christian" from 1757, and is thus among the oldest ship models in Danish churches. The ship was donated by a local couple.
In the cemetery surrounding the church, you can see several old family graves that go back a long way. Many of the graves are also interesting from an art and cultural history perspective, and several are also protected or registered as worthy of preservation.
