Skagen received its city coat of arms in 1535.
The grate represents the grate on which the patron saint St. Lawrence was burned in 258 and the fish symbolizes that Skagen is a fishing village.
Laurentius was treasurer for Pope Sixtus II. But during the Roman Emperor Valerian's persecution of Christians, he refused to hand over the church's treasures and instead showed up with a crowd of poor and sick people, for which reason he was placed on a grate and had to suffer martyrdom.
St. Lawrence was the protector of sailors and the poor. After the apostles, he is considered Rome's most important saint.
Many churches bear his name, including the Tilsandede Church in Skagen, of which he was the patron saint.
St. Lawrence's Day is August 10th.
Skagen's coat of arms can be seen in the following places: above the entrance to Skagen Town Hall, in the roundabout at the entrance to Skagen and on the cruise pier.
