VisitTHE HOUSE:
The house is the oldest in Ålbæk, which is a town with 1.800 inhabitants.
The construction method is interesting because it is very economical with wood and thus reflects the catastrophic shortage of wood that plagued the area after the ravages of the sandstorm.
The timber used in the construction of this house was almost entirely collected from the beach. It was wrecked timber from the countless sailing ships that in ancient times ran aground on the coasts of North Jutland – especially on the West Coast.
It wasn't until the 1700th century, when the house was built, that there were no trees growing up here that could be used for timber.
There have been two homes – to the west a detached house with a living room, kitchen and bedroom.
To the east was a dwelling for the new generation on the farm. Here there were two alcoves and a kitchen with an open fireplace with a smoke opening (lyre) in the roof.
The house has extensions to the north and southeast.
THE NAME “SIMONS RAALING”:
One of the last known owners of the house was named SIMON and RAALING is the North Jutland term for the farmhouse of a farm, which SIMONS RAALING was until sometime in the thirties, when the farm buildings were demolished.
The house was inhabited until 1986 – the last 100 years by the Simon family.
THE MUSEUM STARTS:
In 1991, a forced auction threatened to demolish the house. Through donations from people in Ålbæk, a group of local citizens managed to buy the house and begin building a museum.
ASSOCIATED BUILDINGS:
Through donations from several foundations, the municipality and companies, it became possible to obtain more buildings for exhibition and storage of various effects.
During 2017, the museum was expanded with 4 buildings, which were built using old construction methods:
STAKLADEN contains changing exhibitions
FISHING includes SMALL Skagen motor and fishing gear -
SMEDJE contains an old smithy from Ålbæk
CARPENTER'S SHOP contains old hand tools
