VisitIn 1887, the State began to establish the Bunken Dune Plantation.
Only the multi-stemmed mountain pine, which had been brought back from the mountains of Central Europe, had proven to be useful under these very difficult conditions. Just one single plantation required many millions of small mountain pine plants. Only in the most inviting, low and protected areas - such as the easternmost part of Bunken Plantation, where the big mills had not reached - were Scots pine and the newly introduced West American Sitka spruce used experimentally, together with a few other conifer species.
Later, the mountain pine stands on the better lands were replaced with productive tree species such as Sitka spruce and pine species such as Scots pine, single-stem mountain pine or, where all else seemed out of the question, contorta pine.
The highest and driest dune hills are still covered by the carpet of mountain pine that was "rolled out" in its time, and which has therefore shown considerable viability. Most of the "mountain pine carpet" will be preserved. Where it is cleared, the dune nature will be allowed to re-inhabit.
