With its location between 2 seas and its beautifully varied terrain, Skagen Dune Plantation is a worthy representative of the many state-owned dune plantations along the north and west coast of Jutland as a protection against the westerly wind and sand drift.

The plantation south of Skagen, which is located on both sides of the road between Frederikshavn and Skagen, was established in 1888. The planting was directly prompted by the fishing in Skagen - Improved technology meant larger catches.

The catches could be sold and further processed further inland, but the road between Aalbæk and Skagen consisted only of a rut over dunes, heath and beach. The inhabitants of Skagen applied to the Danish Parliament for financial assistance to improve the road or to build a railway. The Parliament demanded that the sand drift be reduced before money could be contributed to a railway.

In 1888, the residents of Skag gifted the Dune Management Service the piece of land where Skagen Dune Plantation was established, and in the summer of 1890, the Skagen Railway was inaugurated.

The many established cycling, hiking and riding trails in the area provide ample opportunity to experience the varied landscape and the diversity of nature.
