In 1891, the state began to establish Aalbæk Dune Plantation. The area today is 736 hectares and consists mainly of sparse dune heath and gently undulating dune plain.

In the dune plantation, mainly Scots pine grows, but also some mountain pine and in some places Austrian pine.

On the slightly better soils, Sitka spruce, which originates from the west coast of North America, has been planted. In a few places, birch and oak grow. The pine trees allow a lot of light to fall onto the forest floor, which is covered in grass and moss in many places. Especially in autumn, many mushrooms grow on the green forest floor.

In the coming years, the forest district will plant more deciduous trees in the plantation, and many trees will be allowed to grow old and decay naturally.

In the forest there are areas with rocky plain, a landscape that is very special for the region. The plantation has a rich birdlife. A special experience is hearing the night raven on a quiet summer evening.
